Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced
Items needed:
One image that has 1 or 2 standout features. The sample image had just one standout feature, "The Cat".
No outside filters will be needed to complete this project. Just Paint Shop Pro 10.3, this can also be completed using other versions of PSP but will take more work to accomplish.
Step 1:
Open the image you want to use and make a copy of it by doing a Shift plus D on your keyboard. Then close the original image.
Step 2:
Make your "Freehand" selection tool the active tool with the settings below.

Step 3:
Please keep in mind that your "selections" do not have to be absolutely perfect for this project. Just do as good a selection(s) as you can.
Ok that said make your selection all around your "standout" portion of your image using small clicks with your mouse. Double click your mouse when you reach the spot you began at. Then go Selections Promote Selection to a layer. Like below. As you will see I have chosen a rather ambitious image to work with, I did this so that you will also learn about making additional selections from the same image.

Step 4:
If you have more to select then go ahead and remember hold down your shift key to select them and then promote each of your selections to a layer. In the screen shot below where the red arrows are is my second selection, where the yellow arrows are is pieces I have to delete from my selection. Do do this I must be on the layer that I just promoted the selection from.

Step 5:
Turn off your bottom layer and then make sure you are on one of the active layers, right click any active layer and choose Merge/Merge Visible.

Step 6:
Ok your active layers have been merged. Turn off the merged layer and make the bottom layer the active layer and then go Effects/Texture Effects/Emboss. Then go Adjust/Hue and Saturation/Colorize and use the sliders to achieve a color that you like and suits your image.

Step 7:
Turn on your top layer again and make it the active layer. Then go Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow and apply a good shadow so that your main part of your image really stands out! Apply the shadow twice once with positive numbers and once with negative numbers.

Step 8:
Merge both layers now and frame your image with a suitable frame and your done. I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial.
