Hanging Quilt Sample Image

Skill Level:

Beginners to Advanced

Items Needed:

6 pattern images for your wall hanging. Or you could try mine.

Paint Shop Pro most all versions

Step 1:

We will begin by making our "Quilt" block. We will use the same block for all the blocks.

Step 2:

Open a new image that is transparent 475 X 475 set the resolution to 200.00

New images and settings.

Step 3:

Make your "Pen" tool the active tool and use the settings shown.

Step 4:

We will now make the pattern segments that will be filled with your patterns. Change your foreground color to black and make the background color "null"

Touch the left side of your transparent image and try to sure to get right up to the edge. Then lift your mouse and move up to the upper right almost and again touch your pen to the upper edge.

Making first line.

Continue doing this until you have something similar to the below. You should have 6 segments that you will be filling with your patterns. Then right click and choose change to raster layer. Then in the layer control box right click any layer and choose Merge/Merge Visible.

Quilt Pattern

Step 5:

Using your Magic Wand Tool test all the segments to make sure that when selected, no other segment also gets selected. If they do then make your Paint Brush Tool the active tool and set it to around 3 or 4. Then zoom in on your quilt block and carefully look for places where the black lines to not meet. Use your paint brush to close any gaps.

Step 6:

Using your Magic wand touch on any of the black lines. They should all have marching ants. Go Selections/Promote Selection to Layer. Rename the layers by double click on each and then type in what you want to call them. Then turn off the top layer. Here's mine.

Naming of Layers

Step 7:

First open all your "Pattern Fills" and make the bottom layer the active layer and using your Magic Wand click in any of the transparent areas and then expand the selection by 4. Do that by going Selections/Modify/Expand and type in the number 4.

Fill that area with one of your chosen patterns. Continue Selecting and expanding selections then filling the segments and do not use the same pattern twice. You will end up with something like the below.

Quilt Block

Step 8:

Now we need to give all the segments the "illusion" of a seam. Turn on the top layer and see if you think that the lines you made are too heavy for a seam. I think my are so I will actually delete that layer and re-do the lines at a smaller number.

Repeat step 4 only set the line width to 2 and make new lines for all the segments. You should end up with something like below.

Seams created.

Step 9:

On the Layer control box right click any layer and choose Merge/Merge Visible. Then save that image as my-block-one.

Step 10:

We are going to use this one block to create three more blocks BUT we will rotate the blocks and/or mirror/flip so they are not ALL the exact same.

Do a shift d on your key board to make a copy. Then on the copy go Image/Free Rotate and rotate the image by 90 degrees left.

Step 11:

Every time you rotate any thing you should also "sharpen" the image. Myself I prefer to use the "unsharp mask" Use the settings below.

Step 12:

Save that image as my-block-two.

Step 13:

Using your block tow image again do a shift d on your key board and then go Image/Mirror. Save that image as my-block-three.

Step 14:

Make your my-block-one the active block and again make a copy. Using the copy go Image/Mirror and then go Image/Flip. Save that image as my-block-four. We now have enough blocks to work with. We will need to resize them though as they are far to big to use for a quilt hanging.

Step 15:

Resize all the blocks by 50% and re save.

All your blocks should now be 238 X 238 pixels. We need to multiply that 238 by 4 and then open a new transparent image with those dimensions.

Step 16:

Open a new transparent image that is 952 X 952 pixels.

Step 17:

Bring up one of your blocks and then in the control box Click on the layer and hold the click. Drag that layer over to the "New" transparent image let go the click and make the mover tool the active tool and move it up to the upper left corner. Then close the image of the block you just dragged over (so you don't use it again). Here is a smaller screen shot for positioning on this first block.

Mover Tool   Block moved to upper left corner

Steps 18, 19 and 20 are the same as step 17 except that you will position the blocks beside each other and all at the top so that the blocks are aligned across the top of the new transparent image. Like below.

Blocks aligned

If you need to zoom in to be sure that they are all aligned correctly with no gaps then do that.

Because you dragged the blocks over it created a new layer for each block. Go to your Layer control and right click any layer and choose Merge/Merge Visible.

Step 21:

Go the the Layer Control and right click on the merged layer and choose Duplicate. Using the Mover Tool again drag that layer down to a post ion below the top one and align it carefully to the bottom of the top one.

Step 22:

Again merge the visible layers.

Step 23:

Again duplicate the layer but this time also go Image/Flip and you will have filled all the transparent part of the image. Merge visible layers again. You should have something like this.

Quilt Filled with Squares

Step 24:

I am sure you have seen quilts with "top stitching" and this is what we will do in this step. Set your foreground color to black and make your background color null.

Step 25:

Make your Pen Tool the active tool. Set your line to be dashed and the size to 5. We now "Top Stitch" the quilt using the lines between each "block". Make the stitches in a straight line, by clicking once at the top, and holding the click and your shift key and drag your line down to the bottom of your quilt.

Continue "Stitching" until all the "Vertical" Stitching is done. Then using the same technique "Stitch" your "Horizontal" lines. You will end up with something like below.

Step 26:

Ok the making of the "Quilt" is finished now we have to make it into a Wall Hanging. The first thing to do is to resize the quilt. Please use the settings below.

Step 27:

Now it's time to add the "border" for the quilt but, first we have to enlarge the canvas to accommodate the border. Go Image/Canvas Size and add a nice sized border.

Increasing Canvas Size   Canvas Settings

Step 28:

Choose a color for your border one that will compliment your quilt hanging. Then make your magic wand the active tool and touch anywhere on a transparent area, and then promote that selection to a layer and flood fill it with your chosen color.

29:

Still on that new layer that was created when you promoted your selection and filled it. Use your Magic Wand and touch in the center so the marching ants are running around the inner portion of the quilt. Then go Effects/3D effects/Cutout and use the settings below. This will give the illusion of a little puffy look as if it had been stuffed a little with batting.

Effects Cutout   Cutout Settings

Step 30:

Again we have to add some extra canvas so we can make the "Bar and Tabs and Bar Ends" to turn your image into a "Wall Hanging". Repeat Step 27.

Step 31:

We need a "Bar" now to hang the quilt from. I am going to use a wooden one. Make your selection tool the active tool and set it to "Rounded Rectangle" and make a selection above the quilt in the empty space. Make it a little wider that the quilt itself. Leave some space between the "bar" and the "quilt hanging" Flood fill your selection with wood or use one of your filters to create a "chrome" style bar.

Here is my Wooden Bar.

Wooden Bar

Step 32:

Yes we are almost done. Make your selection tool the active tool. Add a new layer to your quilt. Change your selection tool to rectangle and make a selection from just above your "Bar" to just below your quilt top and then flood it with the same color you used for the binding. Like this.

Single Tab Created and Filled   You can use your mover tool to position it if you need too.

Step 33:

Duplicate your tab layer and then use the Mover Tool to position it. Continue duplicating and moving until you have something like below. Keep the space between each tab as equal as you can.

Wall hanging tabs added.

Step 34:

From the layer control box right click any layer and chose Merge/Merge Visible.

Step 35:

Crop or Resize to a manageable size for the Internet and your done.
